RULE TO CHANGE ACTIVE NARRATION CHANGE TO THE PASSIVE NARRATION

Change in interrogative sentences.
1. In indirect speech, if the reported speech is started with word why, what, where, when, how etc. When it will be changed into direct speech the following changes.
(i) The verb of the reporting speech will be changed into inquired or asked.
(ii) That will be not added before reported speech.
(iii) The sequence of interrogative will be changed into assertive.
For example
I said to him, “what is your name?”(direct)
I asked to him what his name was.(indirect)
He said to me, “When will you come back?”(direct)
He asked me when I would come back .(indirect)
He said to me, “Why are you late?”(direct)
He asked me why I was late .(indirect)
I said to him, “Where are you going now?”(direct)
I asked him where he was going then .(indirect)
He said to me, “Who has stolen my pen?”(direct)
He asked me who had stolen his pen .(indirect)
He said to me, “Which is your book?”(direct)
He asked me which my book was.(indirect)
He said to the boy, “Why are you weeping?”(direct)
He inquired the boy why he was weeping. (indirect)
2. When questions beginning with an auxiliary verb are to be changed into indirect speech, if or whether is used to join the reporting speech and the reported speech and question is converted into a statement.
For example.
He said to me, “Is your brother ill?”(direct)
He asked me if my brother was ill.(indirect)
3. The helping verb of May and Can will be change into might and could.
For example.
The man said, “May I come in?”(direct)
The man asked if he might come in.(indirect)
He said to me, “Can you open the big door?”(direct)
He asked me if I could open the big door.(indirect)
